Keeping Pets Safe in Warm Weather
General Precautions
Ensure pets have unlimited access to fresh water.
Provide shade when they are outside.
Avoid leaving pets in a car, even with windows cracked, as temperatures can rise quickly.
Exercise Guidelines
Walk pets during cooler hours of the day, such as early morning or late evening.
Limit exercise on particularly warm days; short walks are best.
Avoid hot surfaces like asphalt, which can burn paws.
Recognizing Heat Stress
Watch for signs of heat stress, including:
Excessive panting
Restlessness
Drooling
Unsteadiness
Abnormal gum color
Cooling Techniques
Use cooling mats or elevated dog beds to help regulate body temperature.
Consider water activities like swimming, but supervise closely.
Offer ice cubes or cold treats to help cool them down, but avoid hard treats that could cause dental issues.
Special Considerations
Brachycephalic breeds (short-nosed dogs) are more susceptible to heat-related issues.
Older pets and those with health conditions may need extra care in warm weather.
Consult a veterinarian for tailored advice based on your pet's specific needs.
And don't forget to leave outside some water in a shallow tray for birds. They may suffer from thirst stress too!!
